Why Parties Are Important To A Hollywood Career - Donald F. Glut
Donald F. Glut has been active in both the entertainment and publishing industries since 1966. Don has had a long and varied career. He has been a professional musician, actor, film director, executive producer, photographer, magazine editor, proofreader and (very briefly, for an advertising agency) copywriter, but is mostly known for his long career as a freelance writer. He has written and directed feature-length motion pictures, documentaries and music videos, authored approximately 80 fiction and non-fiction published books, myriad TV scripts (live action and animation shows, network and syndicated), comic-book scripts, short stories, magazine articles, even music and theatre. He has been involved with numerous popular franchises such as Star Wars, The Monkees, Tarzan, Spider-Man, Transformers, G.I. Joe, Vampirella, Masters of the Universe, The Flintstones, Jonny Quest and many others, and created original comic-book characters for Gold Key, Marvel and DC. Arguably Don is best known for his novelization of the second "Star Wars" movie The Empire Strikes Back (#1 Best Seller). Don currently executive-produces, writes and directs "traditional-style" horror for his company Pecosborn Productions, and writes scripts for The Creeps horror comics magazine. Also, he is a Southern California representative of Las Vegas Talent Agency. Note: Any motion picture titles that may be listed prior to Dinosaur Valley Girls (1997) are of amateur movies, the first of 41 of which Don Glut made when he was nine years old.

Was waiting for but didn't hear "In real time." If it's not in real time, you can cut wherever and however you want. I just watched the trailer (looks dope!), and the room appears so big that even if the movie is in real time you can still cut all over the place and now I'm baffled. I want to understand! (this is how you get me to watch your movie, clever indeed!)

2024 now and pretty much nothing in this video is reality. Studios/Streamers have switched to "implosion mode" where they are only proceeding with DEI projects from no talent hacks that have the right pronouns and politics. The writers strike and covid have pretty much killed off the industry. Star Wars, Star Trek and Doctor Who are all dead, DEI'd to death, and the contests now will ONLY select DEI purple hair winners. One of the major screenplay/film festivals have chosen DEI winners for the great majority of their winners for four years in a row. The film world Corey is talking about with story engines no longer exists. If you have the right pronouns, and skin color and sexual orientation and have a script that follows "the message" you might be able to proceed. If you are a normal person with a great screenplay. Forget it.

Jill is absolutely correct...you can combine different screenwriting books. You should actually! To me, Jill's technique focuses on more of the emotional arc of the story. Whereas, Save the Cat's Beat Sheet is like a structure for your emotional story. Jill provides an emotional map. I use Save the Cat, Nutshell Technique and Alan Watt's tips as well.

The falling into a deep chasm death also was how they killed Sirius black in Harry Potter in a way. In the film he just falls back into this foggy void and we’re like “wtf?!”. I never liked how they killed him like that. And on the swappings (gender, race, etc), I’ve never liked that because it’s trying to fix something that was never broken and it’s implying that the opposites of whatever is being swapped (if it’s mostly a male cast switching to all females, mostly white switching to all black, etc), it’s implying that those people could never have watched, enjoyed or related to those characters/story UNLESS they saw someone “who looks like them.” That’s INCREDIBLY sexist/racist/discriminatory because it’s saying flat out “you’re too stupid to enjoy, relate or understand what’s being shown to you. So we have to ‘dumb it down’ so you’ll get it.” That’s WAY worse than any “white washing” or whatever has ever been done I would think. Could you imagine going up to a black woman and saying “sorry, but you’re too stupid to watch Steel Magnolias as is, so we have to put Queen Latifah in it so you’ll understand what’s happening.” 😱 You’d get your face bashed in (or worse) because that’s terrible and racist as all get out. Yea, sure, we need movies to represent SOME things, but when a movie is ONLY made for that, there is ZERO question or doubt - that movie is trash with a capital garbage. They focus on the propaganda and little to no focus at all on the story - which is the ENTIRE point of the film. But they do this to ride the waves of civil unrest. It’s like war profiteering. They make the most money (they think) on movies that are geared for the targeted groups. It’s truly sad that movies and so many other great entertaining mediums are being suffocated with money hungry, non creative mentalities. With everything “getting a comeback” - from clothes to film to games - we’re back in the 90/80/70/60s but the passion and creativity from those eras isn’t alive anymore. We’re just sticks in the mud, sinking from stagnation. Such a shame 😞

A big advantage is in the UK theatre scene, TV industry and film industry are all in the same city, so British actors hone their skills in all three mediums making them more skilled actors. Also in British acting schools actors are trained to play all parts, while Americans actors are trained to play certain types of characters leading to less versatile actors.

The concentration of wealth in fewer and fewer hands over the past forty years has had a significant impact on the lack of creativity we are seeing in anything that is artistic or aesthetic or requires charm. Greedy people aren't interested in aesthetics. They are interested in money. As wealth is more and more concentrated in the hands of the greedy, aesthetics naturally suffer. Movies and the entertainment industry are suffering greatly because artistic people have no money while the folks with the money are essentially dead inside. We really pay a great price for the pox of wealth concentration that we have experienced over the past four decades. Look at the monstrosities like Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Las Vegas - where rich, soul-less people are obsessed with building these huge charmless grossly expensive monuments to nothing.

Didn't use to. Started. But I'm finding it difficult because the scenes start opening up as I'm writing and the characters start to come to life. I find them 'saying things' I hadn't anticipated. It works and sometimes it doesn't. I'm working on something that begs to be outlined because it's so involved with lots of twists and turns. I think a roadmap is necessary.
